Purple on the whites of eye?

My boyfriend recently has a purple/red blotch on the whites of his eyes. It is under the lid so he has to oped his eyes wide or lift his eyelid to be able to see it. He says it is getting bigger. We were wrestling that day, is it something to be concerned about or is it just a bruise?
